Storyline
To all of those who know the truth
But keep it hidden well,
To all of those who keep the secret
And ever dare to tell,
I want you to know I'm one of you
And that you are not alone,
I know about all you're feeling
For those emotions are my own.
I know about lying awake at night
And wondering if it's true,
I know about the self-doubt
That forever eats at you.
I've done and felt these things before,
The torture, fear, and pain,
And I know about the lonely tears
That fall like autumn rain.
But I need you to hold on for me,
And to always keep your faith,
For everyday we come ever closer
To the truth that is our fate.

The above poem was the intro to the story and I thought it would be nice to start of my review the same way the author started her story, with this poem. I believe this poem best describes this story, which is only up to Chapter 4 and so this review will be incomplete, as I have not read the whole story. However, I am more concerned about the way the story was written.

Before I began, perhaps a brief summary on the story.

The story began interestingly, with really horrific description of perhaps a brutal rape cum murder, by a bunch of people. The whole story's protagonist, I believe is the character of Ellena and her connection with Vicki and all those she calls friends. The first part of the story, the author described how a girl named Ellena was lured into a vault in her school, was brutally raped . However, the author did not expressly said rape, though there were tell tale signs such as "She felt their hands upon her body, slick with sweat, as they shoved her to the ground. Pinning her beneath them, they devoured the essence of her, greedily and though she fought and kicked, they held her as easily as a trapped bird within their grasp. She could feel her skirt fluttering in the coolness of the wind, while their lean bodies weighed down upon her, and though she struggled to cover herself, their lips traced a path of fire down her neck and traveled further down, their fingers tearing her delicate dress, ripping it to shreds" and we know it was a brutal rape by someone, many people that this Elena knew as the Author wrote " But through some remote corner of her mind, she sensed his presence nearby and she knew that he was watching this, watching what was happening to her and yet, he did not lift a finger to help her. And through her film of tears, she saw two figures hovering above her. In the darkness, she could not see their faces, but she saw their eyes --- unmistakable eyes of familiarity - and she knew then, that none of her nightmares could be as cruel and scarring as this one.

But this was reality, not a nightmare. This was the reality of her own Death.

And as the lightning lit up the dark, vast vault, the sliver glimmer from a knife was lowered toward her throat and her breath was cut off before she had a chance to scream. "

We know Ellena died a cruel death. Then the next chapter talked about Vicki who had these visions of Ellena dying, that as a reader we suspect she either has psychic power or she must have been in that same room. We will never know until the last chapter. But we know the other characters, like Cecilia, Alec seem to know what was going on. The question thus is, who is Ellena, why Vicki has vision of this supposedly dead girl, is she a spirit or a haunting past of Vicki's? Why Alec, the sickly one seems to know her and why Cecilia seems to know  her as well but there was no fear in knowing her? Is Ellena dead or alive? And how Stephen Fung fits into the picture?

Comments
So far I am unable to answer these questions and only the Author knows where the story is heading. But I believe we have a suspense story, intertwined with love stories in here. And that is the main problem with the story.

The 1st chapter would grab your attention, making you feel horrified for Ellena and what happened to her would probably haunt you because the author gave a very powerful description, equipped with wind, thunder and what nots. We have powerful description of what happened in there and Ellena's fear but we do not know who the perpetrators were, except she knew them and she knew she was going to die. We never know why she walked into that room but perhaps this will be explained. We do not know where and the timeline, and so this adds to the mystery of the whole circumstances. This first chapter will make you read every word and make you wonder.

And then the author began the story properly and that was when the usual norm of love stories began, with really unrealistic dialogues and even more unrealistic timeline.

We are introduced to the neurotic Vicki, who has a best friend in the likeable Cecilia who clearly habours some feelings for Alec, Vicki's boyfriend of 3 years. But Vicki wanted to end the relationship, because she felt it would be unfair for Alec to love her when she didn't love him the way he would expect her to. She still loved her Stephen who left 5 years ago. But the separation between Vicki and Alec was no separation at all. Alec gave her a ring and she thought she saw the words Ellena and became hysterical. Whilst Alec, who had  a million illnesses seemed unable to bear the hurt he caused  her, without knowing what was the cause and yet he blamed himself, she ran away, hysterical and blaming herself for screaming and accusing Alec. And then Vicki, in the rain saw Stephen again who came back after 5 years of separation and confesses that he still loves her and so their relationship began again, but the end of Chapter 4 had one intriguing end, Alec saw Ellena and he knew her. And so the question goes back to, Who is Ellena.

Now the problem with this story as I have said is the timeline. I would prefer the author did not describe Vicki's age, because then it would be easier for me to believe in loving someone as much as she did, etc etc etc. But the author said her age was 19, she was off to College with Cecilia. She and Alec were dating for 3 years and thus she must have been 16 when they dated. Stephen left 5 years ago, and they dated for a year and so she must have been 13 when she met, fell for and dated Stephen and she must have been 14 when he left.

Am I supposed to believe at the age of 14 this young girl seemed more concerned about her love life than her studies? Wouldn't when you were 14, the love she felt for Stephen was more of a crush, an infatuation, rather  than true love, passionate love? I don't buy that fact. I can't.

Frankly, I was half expecting the author to write, after Stephen met Vicki again and confessed their love that they will rush off to a motel and you know, "DO IT". But she didn't and I give her credit for not going down the same old road.

However, the great weakness of this story is perhaps the structure of the story, or rather how it was continued after an excellent beginning. We have the old cliché about love, we have a guy who is lovable and sickly and loves her till death, we have a heroine who loves him too but not the way she loves another who comes back to tell her how much he loves her, we have the usual best friend, etc etc etc. For me, that ia all pure drama and nothing exciting. In fact I feel the weakness of this story is how the author began the story about the love affairs and I hope more attention will be given to the suspense part of the story rather than soppy love stories.

Perhaps I must stress that I am not an expert Storyteller. But I have read a lot of books, from the good ones to the bad ones, from romance to thrillers, suspense to drama, children's books to everything else. I noticed the author of this story wants to make her story suspenseful, and added a bit of love stories for completion sake. She gave description after description after description, from the weather to the details of the room to emotions of the characters, which is more often posed more as a question than an answer. In the end, we know little about the characters. Of course I don't expect the author to start of the story with describing their height, weight, features since this is a fan fiction and as a fan fiction we have Vicki Zhao and we know how Vicki Zhao looks like. And that is another problem with this story.

I have always been apprehensive about fan fiction. I like reading books that gives as little of facial description as possible, because then my imagination could run wild, and I could be a casting director, and imagine who would be perfect for this and that character. This is why I am more intrigued with the character of Ellena than Vicki herself. We know nothing about Ellena and we could guess and argue and ponder. I am not criticising fan fiction but the first chapter of this story had class and a very distinct powerful style. And then I saw the name Vicki. Somehow the credibility was all gone.

As for the description of the room, and etc, I noticed that 80% of the 4 chapters are about the things that surrounds the character of Vicki, and sometimes we get an insight as to how she feels, in dramatic dose of hysterics. But somehow I feel a good story should be more than that. When I began to feel like I know the character a bit, to feel for her, the author pulls us away and give us the next chapter, which always ends with a suspenseful question and yet no answer. I felt like I was reading the X-Files but less on the powerful description of emotions. Sure, the right words were used, in fact I must give credit to the author for the rather flowery description of emotions and matters but somehow I felt something was missing. I can't put my finger into what it is since the story has yet to begin. A person that I know once told me what is a good story. It is not a description of events, rooms,  or writing about how a character throws a chair to connote frustration, kiss to connote passion and self doubt through dialogues to connote a low self esteem. It should be more than that and I once asked her, "What is the more than that? How?". She couldn't answer but she says she knows one when she reads one. I  couldn't understand what she meant until I read a short story by Edgar Allen Poe. I forgot the title but remembered the story for the very powerful description. And then I knew what she meant. Even till this day I could imagine myself in the same room as the character, hearing the heartbeat of a man that the character just killed. It was all about one's own conscience. Or more to the point, Harry Porter series is such a story. I could feel myself in the place, when I close my eyes I thought I was with Harry Porter and his many adventures, I could feel the book and every word and I could never shake out of my mind the words in the books. That is the power of a good story with very powerful description. This story, Soul Seekers - Legacy, which has a very interesting title which will make you wonder, what is the type of story? ...has that feel in the first chapter and when it came to the 2nd chapter and thereafter, the whole feel for me was gone. Perhaps I am not a fan of romance stories but I hope the author has the whole story mapped out in her mind and that she would not deviate from the main point in the story, which I feel is the character of Ellena and her connection with everybody. Vicki's role is perhaps here to provide us with the answer.

Anyway, I would hope the author would complete the story and avoid from the usual love stories. Perhaps more attention should be given to the very first chapter, the terrifying ordeal one character suffered and explanations as to what really happened and why. I really do not hope to read about how Vicki is torn between two men, how one best friend falls for another, how she would be abandoned and more men in her life. I want to read what is the connection between Ellena and Vicki, why she could feel her pain, why she felt connected to Ellena and will she be in any mortal danger if the truth be known? And perhaps an answer could be provided to the question, "Who is Ellena?".

Funn's Recommendation
It is not completed yet but worth a read. Take my advice. When you read the first chapter, read it in a dark room, preferably when it is raining with thunderstorms for full effect. Overall, a good effort but could be much better and so we will have to wait and see for Chapter 5 and so on.
